Issue 99 - June 2017
From the Assistant Editor:
When I sit at the computer to work I often listen to music in my headphones. The changes in tempo and mood help to keep me focused and break up the computer daze. If I draw a blank for what to play I set my library to shuffle. The ensuing playlist is composed of old and new favorites, a few forgotten but welcomed tracks, as well as some songs I swear I didn't know I had but are fun discoveries. I'm going to opt out of a long dissertation here, but I'd like to offer the idea that photographs and music pair well with experience and memory.
The portfolios in Issue 99 remind me a bit of my daily sonic adventures: the images from artists Deb Achak, Maria Babikova, Oleksankr Ivanchenko and Franco Sortini hit a lot of different notes for me. There is a sense of familiarity in each of the bodies of work. Each artist takes us on a journey that feels almost nostalgic but at the same time foreign; equal parts comforting and unexpected. I hope you enjoy the portfolios, as well Lauren Greenwald's essay Let's Talk About PLACE and Leo Hsu's review of Photobooth: A Biography by Meags Fitzgerald. Thanks Lauren and Leo for always being here for us when we need you!
The Fraction Shop is steadily growing and picking up lots of fantastic work from a variety of photographers. Check it out, support artists and Fraction, and build your collection! We've got something for everyone! As always, thanks for your support. Please stay in touch and keep us up on your latest work.
Best,
