Rain Shadow by Sage Brown

Issue 123

Rain Shadow is a collection of images made throughout Oregon—both in the immediate neighborhood surrounding my home as well as various rural communities across the state.

Raised in a small rural community an hour from a single stoplight town built on agriculture in one direction, and an urban center an hour in the other, I was split between these two worlds, never feeling fully at home in either place. Today, after over a decade of urban dwelling, I find myself unsettled, disillusioned, and questioning how we define ourselves geographically and culturally in America today.

With each image in the series, I invite myself and the viewer to contemplate the nebulous relationship between the subjects. Sometimes their connection is clear, others less so. This uncertainty drives the work forward as I continue seeking answers.
