Everything Changed, Then Changed Again by Ivette Spradlin
Everything Changed, Then Changed Again features portraiture of women in transition, in locations undergoing their own transformation in and around Pittsburgh. Having grown up in Miami and Atlanta, I was not accustomed to Pittsburgh's long and isolating winters. I started this project in the midst of my second winter here, wanting to connect with people and build friendships.
There were a few locations I selected, but most often the subjects choose a place that is evolving or that is significant to them. It revealed a facet of their life we could discuss and explore, and is a great way of forming bonds and creating substantial, meaningful work.
These photographs document my attempt to build a community here and familiarize myself with the diverse and complex landscape. Through capturing these wonderful women on film, my own renewal is explored.
