Daniel W Coburn reviews the Think Tank Photo Sling-O-Matic 10
Think Tank makes camera bags that are comfortable, functional, rugged and stylish. How do they do it? They don’t cut corners. I recently test drove the Sling-O-Matic 10 and discovered that it’s design and construction is superior to any other comparable bag.
The exterior and all of its soft components are made of ballistic and velocity nylon. Awesome. The zippers are heavy duty and resistant to snags, scuffs and scratches. The bag can be thrown over your shoulder or carried in hand by one of three sturdy nylon handles. It is also equipped with a total of eight nylon loops on the bag and three on the strap that can be used for attaching gear such as light meters, reflectors, or a small tripod.
Its unique shoulder strap is designed to slide between both sides of the bag to make gear accessible from the top, regardless of which shoulder you favor. This is a major selling point for those that are left-handed or will be carrying the bag great distances. The strap is well padded and comfortable which is good, because this bag holds a lot of gear!
The Sling-O-Matic 10 will carry a regular sized DSLR with a 70-200 f2.8 lens and lens hood attached, or 2-3 additional lenses and a flash. Think Tank includes four movable velcro dividers which makes it easy to customize and organize the bag for your specific camera rig. The exterior features three roomy side pockets for your memory cards, chargers, cables, filters and equipment manuals. If that’s not enough, there is a handy vinyl pocket just inside the cover for those items that you need right at your fingertips.
This bag is ideal for the photojournalist, editorial photographer, tourist or overall photography enthusiast. I wouldn’t recommend taking it on a 10 mile hike, but it’s fine for covering a sporting event, shooting a wedding, or a day at the zoo. My biggest complaint is that there isn’t a pocket designed to hold an ipad or a tablet, which for me, is a necessary accessory. At a price point somewhere around $138 the Sling-O-Matic 10 is going to offer the most bang for your buck.
