“The series, Lost Hills, by Sam Comen was selected for the Project Launch Award for the immediate visual impact of the photographs, and importantly, the clear and appropriate strategy for developing the photographs into a cohesive body of work. Sam Comen's creative use of light and positioning of his subjects within the frame make this a photographic series with excellent potential.
The two awards with Honorable Mentions have been awarded to Yoko Kanayama and Luca Zanier for submitting photographic series that are clearly in progress, and demonstrate a fresh perspective on their respective subjects.
In all three cases, the photographers offered realistic plans for moving their projects forward, clear artist statements and a creative use of the photographic medium. Their projects are at a point where this award will make a real difference to bringing the projects to completion and will offer the first important step to gaining exposure to a wider audience.”
